KT Cafe Bar & Grill ~ Monterey Park, CA

I didn't think my first official review on this site would be on an LA based restaurant but since I've never been to this place before, and I have time tonight to write about it, sure why not? :)

Tonight, my parents and I had gone to El Monte to visit relatives who we haven't seen for awhile. And after chatting for an hour, we left to go find food in the area.

My mom was leaning more towards restaurants where the primary carbohydrate would be rice but I was jonesing for HK style cafes which is Chinese/Western style. I do love Monterey Park for the abundance of Hong Kong style cafes and restaurants. We need more of those down in the OC :p (At least more tastier cafes that open past 10 pm!)

My dad suggested KT Cafe which he's been to before a couple times and have enjoyed it. I have to give props to my dad; he likes to go to new restaurants or cafes by himself after he either a) hears about it on the 1430 AM radio b) reads about it in the newspaper or c) just happens to drive by a place that intrigues him. He'll then go in and grab the takeout menu and then come home to pore over it and circle things and then go to the place to try it out. And keep in mind that we live in the OC area so he'll drive all the way back up to Monterey/San Gabriel Valley to eat. :p

We arrived at KT Cafe, which looked like a typical HK cafe- brightly colored with dining booths and at least 2 LCD TVs on the walls.

The menu was very extensive and it took us awhile to figure out what we wanted. The time that we had arrived which was around 8:30 pm did not fit in the time slots of the special deals. There was a 3 pm - 6 pm deal which had dishes for only $4.95! And then there was a 10 pm- 2 am time slot with similar pricing. :(

I settled for the Baked Pork Chop and spaghetti for $7.95. After a complimentary cream soup (which was rather tasty) my dish arrived.

This dish was humongous! Easily shareable between 2 people as there was 2 huge pieces of baked pork chop on a mound of spaghetti. The 2nd porkchop is underneath the one you see on top! The sauce consisted of cheese (yum!) and tomato. The whole dish was very tasty, although after having a creamy soup, this dish was a little on the richer side but it was still good. I adored the spaghetti, and I was able to finish one porkchop. The rest I doggie boxed it home for tomorrow's lunch.

My dad's choice was much fancier. He got the Cheese Lobster and Steak for $13.99.

more cheese!

A petite lobster split in half with baked cheese on top and mushrooms. And a petite steak with steamed vegetables and a scoop of mashed potatoes. I'm not too big on lobster but I took a little bite along with a bite of the steak. The steak was horrible, and I didnt really expect anything earthshattering anyway, and the lobster was fine. But I was going on savory overload with all the rich dishes so when my dad tried to get me to eat more, I said no.

I didn't photograph my mom's dish, but she ordered the Half Cornish Game Hen and Spare Ribs. I enjoyed the game hen, as the meat was juicy and the skin extra crispy. I wasn't too thrilled with the ribs.

Overall a good dining experience and it definitely left me full and overstuffed :x
