Maki Zushi and Berri Best- Tustin, CA

It's hard to keep up with my eating habits!

There has been so many great places I've been to that I'll eventually post about in the next couple days but I wanted to make tonight's post on the sushi feast and dessert I had last night with 2 friends.

We originally had our hearts set on Sushi Shibucho in Costa Mesa but they don't take reservations past 6:30 pm which didn't work with our schedule. We have not been to SS before but I heard so many good things about their omakase that I've been dying to go. Unfortunately, it wasn't going to be last night. :(

I suggested Maki Zushi instead as I've been there a couple times before when it was fairly new and was having the 20% discount during dinner time. They don't do the discount anymore but they still have the Buy-1-Beer-Get-1-Free deal (from 5 pm to closing) which we did not take advantage of because we didn't want to fill up on beer instead of the fish. And a lot of fish we had.....

I'll let my pics do the talking...

^ Salmon and Hamachi - Thickly cut, sweet and tender

^ Classic Tuna Sashimi- I didn't have any of this but it looked great

^ Negi Roll (Bluefin Tuna with Green Onion)- Quite tasty

^ The BSCCR- Baked Scallop California Roll with Eel sauce- This roll was a little too sweet for my liking. I think it's because I've never been a big fan of unagi (eel) sauce.

^ Bluefin Tuna- Deliciously tender

^ Atlantic Salmon Roll- Salmon on California Roll-
Took off the onions on top and this roll was yummy.

^Spider Roll- Warm and soft crunchy crab in CA roll, this dish always makes me full pretty quickly so I ate 1 piece. I don't usually order this roll, but if someone else does I'll snag a piece :)

^ Albacore Toro- Originally we had ordered the Hamachi Toro but they ran out and the waiter suggested Albacore Toro. I'm not ordering this again. The sauce it came drenched with made it overpoweringly strong and sour. Had it not come with the sauce, it would've been alright. But both my friend and I were making faces while chewing this.

Overall a good feast at Maki, although service was quite spotty last night. It was hard to get attention even though eye contact was made, we had to actually call out for service to get them to come over. They had also brought out the check before our Spider Roll was made as they had forgotten it.

The damage? $72 for 3 people.

They had an interesting sounding dessert on the menu that we wanted to try but they had also run out of this. It's the Kahlua with Coffee Ice Cream and Jelly. Maybe next time we'll be lucky.

Since we couldn't get dessert at Maki, I was still in the mood for something sweet and cold so I remembered reading about a place that served frozen yogurt in Tustin. So with my friend's handy internet on the cellphone, we found the address to Lollicup next to Costco, and rolled in at about 9:30 pm.

It was the first we've been to this Lollicup and I only recently found out that they started serving frozen yogurt with fresh fruit toppings. Their menu was small with only Plain Yogurt, the only flavor and a handful of fruit toppings to choose from.

^ I got the Small 3-topping with Strawberries, Blueberries, and Mango

^ A bowl of fro-yo waiting to be slathered with fruit

^ The Trio- The one in the back only has Blueberries

Verdict? Yum! Lollicup calls this brand of frozen yogurt "Berri Best." The plain yogurt was sweet and icy with only a slight tart to it.

It was decently priced, and since it's close to work, I actually went again today during lunch. However, the 3 girls that were working there today were stingy with the yogurt. When I dug in, I noticed that in the middle was a huge hole! The above pictures did not have hollow middles at all, the cup was filled completely. I was a little irritated but Berri Best is still a delicious frozen yogurt place that's nearby for when I'm craving something sweet during weekday lunches.

thank god, buddha, and ghandi you finally tried some new yogurt. i actually like lollicup's yogurt because its very similar in taste to pinkberry and some of the clones. the prices are the same and the fruits are super fresh. finally, you open your mind to new places like me!
