Sushi Shibucho- Costa Mesa, CA

A 2 year anniversary + my S.O.'s belated birthday celebration warranted a special sushi dinner for the 2 of us.

I reserved a bar spot for 6 pm on a Sunday at Sushi Shibucho in Costa Mesa. When we arrived, the whole counter was filled except for 2 spots at the end nearest the entrance door.

The smiling woman gestured us to sit there when I said we had RSVPd and promptly brought out 2 steaming hot cups of green tea, a plate of cooked fish that broke apart with just a touch of the chopsticks, and iced water.

There were 2 sushi chefs behind the counter and we were seated in front of the younger one named Naga who was kind looking and baby-faced.

We ordered Omakase (Chef's Choice) and the treasures came after Naga asked us if we had any dislikes to which I responded: Salmon Roe.

A portion of our Omakase-

Not pictured are the Ebi (large and meaty shrimp), Saltwater Eel (better than freshwater eel), Freshwater Eel and the last dish, Salmon (buttery as always). Everything tasted very fresh and we were very pleased.

The only miss of the night, was the Fish Jello. The words Fish and Jello seriously did not register in our minds, and although it looked like a piece of abstract art, the taste was a combination of salt, crunch, and gelatin. A pass on this particular dish.

Total came out to be $76 not including tip. A great deal for omakase!

*Edit- I forgot to mention that Naga was very heavy handed on the wasabi for the first couple of pieces until we politely asked him to lighten his touch. I like wasabi, but boy my eyes were running!

Hey, Arisu

How many pieces did you eat? From what I counted, I had 34 and two rolls altogether with my S.O. Maybe that's why it came out to be over $100? Thanks!

Hi oohenrioo,

My SO and I both had the omakase and it came out to be...about 26 pieces total or 13 pieces each. No rolls. :)\

Hope that helps!
